How to Choose Art for Your Home

So my favourite event of the year is coming up... yes, you guessed it! The Affordable Art Fair is back in Battersea from the 10th-13th March 2016, and I'm soo excited! I have just moved house so I'm looking for a few new pieces to spruce the place up (watch this space...)

ANYWAY, I wanted to share a few tips on how to choose art for your home.. let me know if you have any questions, and if you have any tips of your own please add them in the comments!

Tips for Starting an Art Collection:

It must inspire you!
Ok, well it doesn't have to actually inspire you, but it should make you FEEL something! In an art gallery or at an art fair you might walk past a hundred pieces that make you feel nothing at all, but then there will be one piece that you see that you just HAVE to have- thats the one! You just have to buy it (if you can afford it)- If it's slightly over your budget there is the 'Own Art' Scheme, which is basically like an interest free finance plan for buying art! You get an interest free loan, and pay it back monthly.

Start with limited edition Prints.
Limited edition prints are an amazing way to get something that is beautiful, special, and still within your budget! Okay, so they are not originals, but they still have value and can be very collectable. If you are spending a lot of money on art, it's great to know that what you have will only increase in value, and only a handful of people will have the same thing.

Shop around.
Don't just buy a piece because you want something to take home with you. When you see the right piece you will just know! It's definitely worth shopping around and visiting a few different fairs. Once you find an artist you love you might buy more than one piece for them, so it makes no sense filling your home with art that you don't love just to fill the walls- save space for the good stuff- it's worth the wait!

A few words from Luci Noel- the Director of the Affordable Art Fair:

“Art galleries are so much more a part of our lives now, and being able to take a piece of it into your own home is a privilege a lot of people, including myself, never thought would be possible Most important is to find something that you want to live with. It could be a huge investment, but you’re going to spend years living with it. My advice is to buy what you love, what excites you."
“I think art can represent something different for everybody. It can be a complete expression of yourself and allow you to explore new possibilities. For a lot of people, it makes a house a home. And it can lead us out of our day-to-day lives. We’re all so caught up in the everyday anxiety of going to work, it can give us something to escape into."
