Having a large bedroom is a luxury that offers endless possibilities for creating a comfortable and stylish sanctuary. However, the expansive space can sometimes feel overwhelming to decorate. Fear not! Here are some of my favourite big bedroom decorating ideas to help you transform your large room into a cozy, functional, and visually stunning retreat.
1. Create Defined Zones

One of the best ways to utilize a large bedroom is to create distinct zones for different activities. Consider dividing your room into areas for sleeping, lounging, working, and dressing. Use furniture, rugs, and lighting to define these spaces. For example:
- Sleeping Zone: Anchor your bed with a stylish headboard and frame, and place nightstands on either side.
- Lounging Zone: Add a comfortable seating area with a loveseat or armchairs and a coffee table.
- Working Zone: Set up a small desk and chair by the window for a cozy home office.
- Dressing Zone: Create a dressing area with a vanity table, mirror, and a wardrobe or closet.
2. Use Statement Furniture

Large bedrooms can handle larger pieces of furniture, so don’t be afraid to go big and bold. A king-size bed with a grand headboard can serve as the focal point of the room.
Consider incorporating a statement chaise lounge, an oversized armchair, or a dramatic armoire. These pieces not only fill the space but also add character and elegance to your room.
3. Play with Scale and Proportion

In a big bedroom, it’s essential to consider the scale and proportion of your furniture and decor. Opt for larger nightstands, lamps, and artwork to ensure they don’t get lost in the space. Similarly, choose substantial curtains that reach from floor to ceiling to add height and drama.
Jewel, from Jeweled Interiors, created the most magnificent bedroom for the One Room Challenge in the image above. This is a great example of how to incorporate statement furniture into your space. The rich colour of the headboard contrasts beautifully with the mural panel behind the bed—and I absolutely love the oversized lampshades! It all works perfectly against the soft pink walls (one of the most calming bedroom colours) to create a space that is perfectly balanced.
4. Layer Textures and Patterns

Designer: Suki Shocker
To make your large bedroom feel cozy and inviting, layer different textures and patterns. Mix soft fabrics like velvet, linen, and faux fur with hard surfaces like wood and metal. Introduce patterns through rugs, throw pillows, and bedding. This combination will add depth and warmth to your room, making it feel more intimate.
5. Incorporate Ample Storage

A large bedroom offers the perfect opportunity to include ample storage solutions. Built-in wardrobes, under-bed storage, and stylish dressers can help keep your space organized and clutter-free. Consider custom shelving or a walk-in closet to maximize storage while maintaining a sleek and tidy appearance.
6. Add a Reading Nook

If you love to read, why not create a dedicated reading nook in your spacious bedroom? Choose a quiet corner and add a comfortable armchair or chaise lounge, a side table, and a floor lamp. Personalize the area with a bookshelf filled with your favorite reads and some cozy throws and cushions.
7. Embrace Color and Light

Interior Designer: Sean Symington
Large bedrooms can handle bolder colors, so don’t shy away from experimenting with vibrant hues. This bedroom design by Sean Symington is a great example of how to use colour in a bedroom to add personality without it feeling overwhelming. The result is a whimsical bedroom that feels homely and relaxing.
You could consider painting an accent wall in a warm color or incorporating colourful bedding and decor. You should also ensure your room has plenty of light. Combine different types of lighting to create a well-lit and inviting space.
8. Personalize with Art and Decor

Personal touches can make your bedroom feel uniquely yours. Decorate with artwork, photographs, and decorative items that reflect your personality and style. A large bedroom provides ample wall space for a gallery wall or oversized art pieces. Don’t forget to include plants and flowers to bring life and freshness into the room.
9. Use Rugs to Define Spaces

Rugs are a fantastic way to define different areas in a large bedroom. Place a large area rug under your bed to anchor the sleeping zone, and use smaller rugs to distinguish other zones. Rugs add warmth, texture, and visual interest to your room while helping to break up the space.
10. Invest in Quality Bedding
Finally, invest in high-quality bedding to create a luxurious and comfortable sleep environment. Choose soft, breathable fabrics and layer your bed with pillows, throws, and blankets. A well-dressed bed can make a significant difference in the overall feel of your bedroom.
Final Thoughts on Decorating a Big Bedroom
Decorating a large bedroom can be an exciting and rewarding project. By defining zones, using statement furniture, and incorporating personal touches, you can create a beautiful and functional space that reflects your style and meets your needs. Happy decorating!
